Jazz Musician & Composer. During a career that spanned seven decades, he will perhaps be remembered for his time with bandleader Stan Kenton. He learned to play the clarinet during his teenage years, and while in high school, he moved on to the tenor saxophone. Following graduation, he served with the United States Navy towards the conclusion of World War II, and following his return home, he enrolled at the Westlake College of Music, where he studied composition. His break in the industry was with the Ike Carpenter Band, and in 1951, he wrote for Charlie Barnet. During the 1950s, Holman became a front figure for the West Coast Jazz movement. He went on to record with Count Basie, Woody Herman, and Buddy Rich, and in 1975, he started his own ensemble. During the course of his career, he won multiple Grammy Awards.
